Surrounded by cubicles and a wide array of books scattered on desks, the Newspaper Team walked through the New York Times building in admiration on December 12th. They quietly waved at some of the New York Times writers at their desk who warmly smiled, then moved their eyes back to their computer screens.
Pat Cohen, a NY times and PEN writer, gave the team a tour of the space and exclusive seats in one of the NYT meetings. Top editors and writers attended the meeting to discuss the stories that would appear in the Sunday paper. Occasionally they called in to another New York Times base in Washington to discuss certain events and get extra feedback.
Once the team exited the meeting, they had a meeting of their own in one of the conference rooms with an extra guest, Jennifer Preston, who is a staff reporter, and the first “social media editor” at the NY Times. The team asked various questions such as “what is the writing and editing process like?” and “How did you decide which field of journalism to enter?” The writers, Pat Cohen and Jennifer Preston, gladly answered the team`s questions and strongly advised to get connected through social media sites such as on Facebook and Twitter.
Overall, visiting the New York Times gave the newspaper team members a broader perspective on journalism opportunities, environments, careers, and the field as a whole.
