Interesting People: Mr. Mullen, Our Newest Dean of Students

Mr. Mullen is one of three deans at MCSM. Normally stationed on the third floor near the elevators, he fist-pumps with some of the students, cracks a couple of jokes and converses with them but still makes sure they get to class. We sat down with Mr. Mullen to learn more about him and what it feels like to be a dean at MCSM.

Q: Tell me a little about yourself?

A: I’m from the lower east side. I’ve been all across the United States. I think I’ve been to 38 states.  I’ve been to countless other countries abroad. They include: Thailand, Cambodia, China, South Africa, Mexico, Jamaica,  The Dominican Republic, Canada, Turkey, and Belize. Traveling is my passion.

Q:What college(s) did you attend? What did you major in?

A: When I first started my college career I started it at BMCC (Borough of Manhattan Community College). I went to Brooklyn College of New York as an undergraduate for my Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, then I went to City College of New York for my masters in special education.

Q:What  was your occupation before you became a dean at MCSM?

A: I’ve been a physical education teacher, and a special education teacher In the Bronx as well as here in Manhattan.

Q:How long were you a Physical Education teacher?

A: I was a Physical Education teacher for about 5 years. I worked at a special education school called Gateway . I also worked at Equality charter school and Eagle Academy. Both are located in The Bronx.

Q: As one of the deans of the school, what are your day-to-day functions?

A: I  make sure students are in their classes and that the student body is safe. I assist teachers and assistant principals with issues that might arise. I also supervise the cafeteria and mediate conflicts.
