Yeiny Moreno, a senior at MCSM, has been a part of the student council throughout her entire high school career. I caught up with Yeiny to talk about the importance of senior council in her high school career and some of her goals for this year.
Q: What does it feel like to be elected as senior class president?
A: I always dreamed of becoming the senior president. For the past three years I’ve been attending meetings where I connect with other councils, including the senior council of each year. I was always very attentive to what they did and always looking to learn from their achievements and successes but also from their lows. I did this hoping that once I was a senior myself, I could use the knowledge I gained for the benefit of my class, the class of 2016. A: The council members and I are planning to add more theme days and to have an overnight trip. We want to add 1-2 theme days, depending on the availability of dates to execute them. We are planning to have an overnight trip this year; although it’s not a new initiative since previous classes have done it, it hasn’t been done in the past two years. We want to communicate with the administration to make sure that the trips and theme days do not interfere with any other academic events. In addition, we want to start having monthly meetings with the senior class. A: It means to be a representative and voice of my class. It also means to be part of a group that works together for the well being of our class in our last year of high school. Being in the council doesn’t mean being more superior than any other student, but doing more for the students. I take my position seriously because I want the best for the class of 2016. A: One of the best ways students can reach out to us is by directly talking to us, which is something that some students have already done, and it has worked. Also, social media is a great way to reach us. We have an Instagram account which is @Mcsmseniors2016 where students can send us direct messages and email us at mcsmseniorcouncil16@gmail.com. We encourage students to reach out to us in any of those ways if they have ideas that they wish to share with us and be involved in student council decisions. The senior monthly meetings, which will start soon, will also be an effective way for students to reach out to us. In these meetings we will be able to inform students and also to get feedback from the students. Q: What are some tips you have for seniors wishing to have an enjoyable, yet productive senior year? A: The main thing I would recommend is to be patient. I know it’s our last year and we want to make it fun, and it will be fun, but everything comes in due time. Additionally, I recommend that seniors not let “senioritis” hit them, especially during this semester. Yes, it’s good to have fun but we need to know that our priority now is applying to colleges. A: I look forward to being done with college applications so that we can focus all our attention on other things. Also, I look forward to the many theme days that we have throughout the year because seeing the seniors dress up for the different theme days showcases to the rest of the school that we are seniors and that, because we are, we get to celebrate it. Q: What do you want the senior class to know about you? A: I want the senior class to know that I’m thankful for choosing me to be their president. Also that they can come to me whenever they need to. I am very approachable and open to listen to anything they have to say including ideas and complaints. But most important of all, I want them to know that I am part of a team, which is the senior council. Everything we do, we do as a team. A: We are planning to have the best prom, senior t-shirts, and senior luncheon that MCSM has ever had. That might be a difficult task but I believe we have a great team and with the help of the students we can do it. This is our last year and we are going to make sure it is memorable. |
