STUDENT LIFE: Summer Internship Ideas

Looking for something interesting and educational to do over the long summer holidays? Below are a few exciting possibilities.  If you miss any of these deadlines, just follow the links to gather information about how to be among the first to apply the following year.

 

Saltz Internship Program: (For rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.)

​​The Saltz Internship is a program at the American Museum of Natural History. Students will complete a total of 100 hours of work during this internship and work four hours for four days a week throughout the summer. According to the program’s website, “participating in the Saltz Internship Program is an opportunity for you to meet Museum personnel, explore scientific content, learn valuable skills for working with and teaching learners of all ages, and have an impact on the experiences of thousands of Museum visitors.” At the end of the internship students will receive a stipend. Student Historian Internship Program: (For rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduating seniors.)

​​The Student Historian Internship Program gives students the chance to work with  the New York Historical Society. According to the program’s website, “Interns meet with professional staff to learn about careers in the museum, library, and history fields; work collaboratively with fellow students to develop their public speaking and leadership skills; and engage in hands-on work to deepen their understanding of American history and art.” The internship lasts from July 3 to August 8 and students are expected to work Tuesday through Thursday for five hours. Interns who demonstrate financial need may be offered a stipend while other interns will have the option to receive community service hours or school credit. The MET Summer Internship Program: (For rising juniors and seniors.)

​​This summer internship opens up the opportunity for rising juniors and seniors to work directly at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. According to the program’s website, the internship “allows students to connect with arts, museum, and creative professionals as they develop professional skills, network, and gain work experience.” The internship lasts from late June to early August and students will receive a stipend at the completion of the program. Each student will be placed in a department, where they will spend 40 hours of the internship. Departments include communications and marketing, education, engineering, imaging, and many more. Summer Health Internship Program with the Manhattan-Staten Island Area Health Education Center: (For rising juniors, seniors, and graduating seniors.)

​This summer internship is a six-week program where students are placed in hospitals and community-based health centers and organizations. According to the program’s website, students participate in weekly instructive sessions with health professionals, go on field trips, and are exposed to health careers and community health issues. GO Project Summer Internship: (For rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduating seniors.)

​This is a five-week program where interns will work with one of the Go Project’s K-7th grade classrooms under guidance of a head teacher or enrichment teacher. During the five-week GO Summer program, interns will be supporting instruction in one of the K-7th grade classrooms under the guidance of a Head Teacher or Enrichment Teacher. The internship lasts from July 1 to August 2 from Monday through Friday for five and a half hours a day. According to the program’s website, “at the end of the summer, interns will have completed a portfolio with work from daily classroom and professional development sessions, co-led a professional development session, gained leadership skills, and developed a culminating Hustle project that they will showcase for other GO Project interns, staff members, board members, and community supporters.” The deadline to apply for the internship is April 29. DOROT Summer Teen Internship Program: (For rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors.)

               This four-week program is unpaid and provides students with a minimum of 92 hours of community service. The first session is from June 24 to July 18 and the second session is July 22 to August 15 and interns are expected to work four days a week (Monday through Thursday) from 10:30am to 5:00pm. Interns visit seniors in their home, teach seniors how to use computers, deliver meals to seniors, read to visually impaired seniors, and more. The Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program: (For rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduating seniors.)

​​This program lasts eight weeks and allows students to work in laboratory facilities and learn about departments involved in clinical research at Memorial Sloan Kettering. According to the program’s official website, “the HOPP Summer Student Program offers students a chance to discover what careers in science are like, make advances toward future career goals, and contribute to the mission of the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.” Students must apply by February 8.
