Introduction: One of New York’s most dynamic multimedia news organizations is Bloomberg News (aka Bloomberg L.P.). Started from scratch in the 1980s as a direct-to-subscriber financial info service, this company has expanded over the years to research and report all kinds of news, gathered and distributed from regional offices throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
Manhattan Center’s newspaper staff was curious about this media and software company, especially how it created a successful international enterprise out of combining new computer technologies with old fashioned good journalism.
At the time of our visit In the fall, the company’s owner, Michael R. Bloomberg, was about to begin a Democratic run for President. Having formerly served three terms as the mayor of New York, Mr. Bloomberg had been able to let his staff run his company without him; thereby proving it possible that he could take time away from corporate life to become an effective elected official.
Now, after terminating his Presidential campaign, Bloomberg continues to run his profitable media company, and just this week told Governor Cuomo he would donate money and time to help New York set up a massive Tri-State área Covid 19 testing program aimed at helping us defeat the corona virus as we move forward into the fall.
Below is a photographic record of our time visiting Bloomberg News and being inspired by being exposed to a possible career path blending technology, research, and writing skills.

Omar Abdelsalam, one of our top reporters.
Our group was given verbal orientation during our visit by several Bloomberg News staffers. Here a member of their PR department details the history of Bloomberg’s financial and general news divisions. Although they usually offer career-oriented tours only to college students, they made a wonderful exception for MCSM.
The brightly lit building in midtown Manhattan has a diverse, multicultural staff, and huge windows overlooking busy New York streets.
Bloomberg News is truly international in scope. The television, print, and radio divisions get live news feeds from all its different bureaus, and broadcast them on electronic wall screens with moving headline “tickers.”
