If you are a student in New York City, you know Regents were canceled last year due to COVID-19.This year it was announced that certain Regents and AP exams would be back on the schedule for the last few months of school.   Since then, many people have expressed their opinions about this situation.

Students feel that during the Covid-19 pandemic, learning has become increasingly hard. Virtual school doesn’t give them the chance to actually have one-on-one interactions with teachers.  It also deprives them of the helpful support of intensive “first hand” learning.  So now they feel they are at a disadvantage with these upcoming tests. They don’t believe they should be penalized by suffering lower scores for something they have no control over.

Since students have expressed these opinions, it’s been rumored that the only Regents that will take place are the ones that are established as Federal requirements, which are: ELA, Math, and Science. This somewhat helps students who are also preparing to take the AP exams. AP exams are optional,  and some students have to pay to take them,  depending on how much their parents earn. During this COVID year,  students are being given the opportunity to take these tests (1) in-person on paper, (2) in-person online, or (3) at home virtually.  These extra options will be a plus for all those who are more comfortable taking important exams in an actual school environment.

Regents Waiver Eligibility: If a student is eligible for a Regents waiver, they can use this waiver toward graduation requirements and are not required to pass that Regents exam. To be eligible for a Regents exam waiver in June or August 2021, students must pass the course sequence leading up to that Regents exam. Students may wish to take the Regents exam if they are not on track toward passing all of the necessary courses by June.

Waivers are available for all 10 Regents exam subject areas. Students should contact their guidance counselor or a school administrator for more information on whether they are eligible to receive a Regents waiver. You can also review a student’s progress toward graduation in their NYC Schools Account by visiting the NYCSA page.
