Ah, Autumn. Sweet, sweet Autumn, arguably one of the best seasons, second to winter, of course. Piles of scarlet and crimson colored leaves lay on the concrete sidewalks, hot chocolate and warm, fluffy wool blankets, a book in hand with a cup of warm tea on the side. Autumn is the best season to read books. Why is that, one may ask? Well, the feelings are wonderful, a cozy environment and a good read—what could possibly be better than that? Lots of authors tend to release new books in the fall as well! Here are five books to add to your TBR (To Be Read) list before Autumn comes to an end.
Little Women, by Louisa May Allcott
Little Women is one of my all time favorite classics to read in the fall. The story follows the March sisters, four girls who have very different personalities. The book is filled with joyful and heartfelt scenes, beautiful moments and the occasional heartbreaks. It is the perfect Coming-Of-Age book for teens! (P.S. there is a movie adaptation starring Emma Watson, Timothee Chalamet & Saoirse Ronan!)
The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde
The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of those books that truly gets your mind working. In addition to Wilde’s extraordinary writing style, the book takes a dive into the early peak of romanticising life as well as what a human soul and personality truly is. The book explores multiple themes that we come across today such as morality, greed and selfishness. This exquisite work of gothic literature will surely take your breath away. (P.S. there is a movie adaptation starring Ben Barnes & Colin Firth!)
They Both Die at the End, by Adam Silvera
Well . . . it’s in the title. They both die in the end. Set in a dystopian world, a company known as the Death Casts informs two unfortunate souls—Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emerterio—that they are going to die today. The book follows the souls as they spend the last day of their life together. Be prepared to cry your heart out as you read about this heartwarming friendship. (P.S. it is currently in the process of being adapted into a television series!)
An Affair of Poisons, by Addie Thorley
An Affair of Poisons is a historical fiction novel based on L’affaire des poisons, a murder scandal that occrued during the reign of King Louis XIV of France. An alchemist and the king’s illegitimate son join hands to overthrow the murderers of the Sun King. Thishrilling heist with a hint of romance will surely keep you at the edge of your seat!
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Arthur Conan Doyle
So we’ve all heard of Sherlock Holmes. But how many of us have read all twelve of his adventures? The book contains a collection of twelve short stories, following a duo by the names of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson who defeats social injustice and solves crimes and mysteries. The stories are told from the point of view of Dr. Watson. Each story is unique in their own way with each story having its own theme. My personal favorite is A Scandal in Bohemia. Be sure to check out these twelve short stories for a night of thrilling crime solving!
So we’ve come to an end! Enjoy these five spectacular reads this season. ‘Till next time, folks!
