Many of you are wondering: what is “culture day?” Well it’s all in the name. Culture Day is a day or event where everyone can showcase their culture. In addition, it’s also a good way for people to see positive representations of themselves without any deliberate misrepresentation or bias from the media. Culture Day at MCSM is nothing new. It has been a school spirit event since forever. But the one problem has been that it’s typically restricted to seniors only.
However in 2022 a big change has taken place. Finally, everyone in all grades can participate in the event. A lot of people were happy to see this shift, including myself. When I asked the student council what made them decide to broaden the participation in Culture Day, they said, “We wanted to do something different this year”.
During this school spirit event I wore a blue “panjabi.” It’s something that boys of South Asian or ‘desi’ descent wear, while the girls wore saree dresses or the elegant two-piece salwar kameez. I also saw typical clothing from other cultures being worn. Some students wore thobes and abayas and keffiyehs from Arab cultures, dresses, shirts, and hats from Hispanic cultures, and so on. I have to say that everyone seemed to go all out during this school-wide celebration that allowed all MCSM students to demonstrate school spirit by showcasing their cultural pride.
What would Culture Day be if it produced no spontaneous fun, or people taking candid snapshots of their well-dressed friends? Indeed, many pictures were taken, and in the lunchroom everyone started dancing and singing as well. Honestly, I was very enthusiastic to be part of this event, for I never thought all grades would be able to participate.
Below you can see pictures commemorating the results. Hopefully in the future Culture Day can be even more inspirational and exciting.
