POETRY: “Am I Just A Number?”

By Gabriella Badmos

Numbers make the world go round
Numbers make lives flip around
Am I just a number?

My grades, my money, my birthday
Are those the things that make me?

Am I just a number? I want to be more
More than a score
Am I just one of the hundreds, thousands, millions?

Can’t I just be me?
Me isn’t a number
It is what it is—
It’s me!

Numbers do not make me
I make the numbers
I put in the work for those grades
I put in all of me even when the numbers fade
When the day is done and the numbers are gone
What else do I have except myself for me to lean on?

I am not a number
I am something more
Numbers are not enough
But it’s me that makes them more
