SPORTS: Lady Rams Compete for a Championship

Report on The Seward Park Volleyball Tournament

On October 7, at the Seward Park Volleyball Invitational Tournament, the Lady Rams fought hard to win the championship at the Grand Street campus.

The Lady Rams were set up in Pool 1 (North Gym ). The teams they were competing against were Seward Park, Hillcrest , Midwood, and Wagner.

The game set up was based on time constraints. For each set the points were 8-8, and there were only 2 sets instead of 3 (usually, if each team wins one set, a third set would determine the winner). A game is typically 25 points but there must be a 2 point winning margin, so there will be a time when a score exceeds 25.

The first game the Lady Rams played was against Midwood. In the first set they triumphed  25-21, and won their second set 27-25.

The next team we played was Hillcrest, with the Lady Rams winning both sets—first 25-18 then 25-21. Then they were up against Seward Park.  We lost the first set 20-25. But the Lady Rams came back in the second set to win 25-17 with a bigger point gap.

Our last game in Pool 1 was against Wagner. 24-16 was the score for our first set, followed by a tight loss of 22-25 in the second set. In total, 5 sets were won and only 3 were lost. That put our Lady Rams in 2nd place for Pool 1. This skilled and enthusiastic team clearly worked hard for a first place win, and despite unexpected losses, it was wonderful to see the Lady Rams make it this far.
