SUMMER PROGRAMS: “Youth Insights” Explores Art Careers

By Lubiana Mahrin

Over the summer I had the opportunity to be part of the Youth Insights Career Program at the Whitney Museum. During this program, we visit other art institutions, and get to meet with people representing many different careers, such as curators, artists, museum directors, museum financial officers, budgeting managers and more. We were able to talk with various professionals to learn about different careers available in museums. We even participated in various arts education sessions and talks, and made ceramics. Overall, this summer was a great opportunity to look at my options, and discover  what other areas I might want to explore in college.

This is one of the sculptures at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens. We met with one of the social media managers that manage the institution’s media pages, and she showed us around the park.

This is what it looks like outside the roof of the Whitney. We were shown the roof where they keep many plants. They also cultivate many bees for honey production.

At Dia:Beacon Museum you see a lot of work composed of lights and how light works in a space. This museum is located at Upstate New York.

Shattered glass work at Dia:Beacon.

This is the Noguchi Museum in Queens. The museum was created by a Japanese-American named Isamu Noguchi. This is one of the art installations of paper lanterns, a traditional feature in Japanese culture and craftsmanship.

If a career in art or museum curation appeals to you, this program is the perfect introduction to some of the possibilities available to you.
