FICTION: “Camel”

By John Tustin

Out in the desert, 2 men face each other. A Blue man and a Green man. They are just staring at each other . . . it is quite odd.

These 2 men had been wandering in the desert for 5 days but had not encountered each other the whole time— which is even more bizarre. At this point they are practically burning holes in each other’s eyes, just staring, as if they see something. Salvation? An enemy? Food? Friend? While these are all things that are there, it is as if they are looking past all that.

Both men, full of equal confidence, walk towards each other aware of each other’s presence, but both unseen. Blue collapses from natural causes and naturally is looted. Green carries on until he see’s another Blue man, where Blue wins the staring contest this time and continues. Now, this cycle continues until a Yellow man starts to encounter these men.  Yellow emerges from the desert with his hidden red knife.

In the desert it is said that there is no life. But, the people who say this don’t account for unseen or ignored life. Like scorpions, cacti, snakes, beetles, etc. In fact, the only visible large and obvious living thing is a Camel. It is strange that a creature that large can survive in a barren land. Luckily for the Camels the world they walk is not barren, and luckily for them they have no color.
