BLACK HISTORY MONTH: A Break-Up Letter to Racism

Editor’s Note:  Since February is known as both Black History Month and the month when Valentine’s Day strives to elevate Love over Hate, Rampage staffer Amen Dilawar decided it was a good month for the world to end its abusive relationship with the habit of Racism.  Below is her official breakup letter.

Dear Racism:

You’ve been a part of our lives for a long time. Our past has been dominated by you. I want to break all relations with you. There’s no reason for you to appear in 2020. Get out of our lives! You don’t let colored people achieve their goals. What good does that do you? Or to everyone else?

Why can’t we all live in peace? Who gave you the right to deprive people of their rights? What’s your role in life? Shouldn’t you care about the content of someone’s character, not their skin color? How dare you ruin the lives of so many people? Who gave you the right to spoil our past? I will not let you destroy the present. You better get this straight. I don’t want to repeat myself in 2021. We were all humans before “race” disconnected us, religion separated us, politics divided us, and wealth classified us.

Nelson Mandela, one of the most influential people on this planet, said that “No one is born hating another person because of their skin,  or his background, or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” After hearing such an exceptional quote, why are you still in people’s hearts, Racism? Why can’t you just leave us alone. The whole world wants to break up with you.

Get out of people’s minds and stop making them do wrong things. What makes you think that looking at someone’s color before looking at their character is more important?

Hating people because of their color is wrong and it doesn’t matter which color does the hating, it’s just wrong! A lot of great people have given speeches addressing you. And yet you still exist! Martin Luther King said in his “I Have A Dream” speech:  “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” He wants you to have no existence, yet you do. MLK’s words should be more than enough for you to vanish. I utter this one more time so we can all break up with you.

Although society sees blacks as a threat, we see ourselves as peacemakers and lovers of all races. We need to be loved too.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! May he be remembered, and you be forgotten.

Sincerely,

The whole world, including everyone.
