COVID-19
City Limits
https://citylimits.org/

City Limits is looking for youth reporters (high school and college undergrad) to help us cover the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly how it’s impacting young people in New York City.

If you have an idea for a potential City Limits story, please send us an email with a pitch (a summary of what your story would be about, what sources you’d talk to, etc.). We think there are a lot of potential avenues for coverage: how remote learning is working out so far for high school/college students, how young people are impacted by/coping with the social effects of the pandemic, what important milestones like graduation or prom will look like this year, etc. Stories don’t necessarily have to have a youth focus — we’re open to other ideas! — though they should be related to the coronavirus crisis, and be based in New York City. We’re only looking for reported stories — sorry, no first-person or opinion pieces. For the sake of safety, all reporting should be done remotely (over the phone or over video chat).

If you’re not sure what goes into a journalism pitch, here are some tips from Poynter and NPR about how to write good ones. Reporters whose pitches are accepted will be compensated for their successfully completed work, with exact payments to be based on story length/reporting effort. Please send your pitches or any questions to Jeanmarie Evelly: jeanmarie@citylimits.org

COVID-19
The 74
https://www.the74million.org/

Get paid to share your story! The 74, a national K-12 education news organization, is seeking student-written articles on how school closures and other concerns due to the coronavirus pandemic have affected you and your school communities. If your school has transitioned to remote learning, how has that worked? Are you experiencing health effects of life under quarantine? What roadblocks to learning have you and your classmates experienced? How are you coping with boredom? If you’re a high school senior, how do school closures affect prom, graduation ceremonies, and your transition to college and career? We value student voices and hope to highlight both the challenges young people face at this time — and the innovative strategies you’ve created to cope. The 74 will pay $50 for first-person article submissions of approximately 500-800 words. If you have an article idea, please email Executive Editor Andrew Brownstein at Andrew@The74million.org with the subject line “Student Voice,” and we will respond as quickly as possible.

Note: Andy would love to get more submissions/pitches from boys and from teen of color

We would be more than happy to consider their submissions, especially if it is localized to upstate New York.

Type of work:  Strong on journalism.  Equally strong on observations about growing up — especially if it relates to the Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Steuben, and Wayne County areas.   For example we had one college student who had the foresight to tape 9 hours of his grandfather before his death. He then used this material to write a 12 issue series about the death and him trying to apply life lessons in growing a garden.
pay — $0…but if the writing is exceptionally good we will double the pay to $00.
restrictions – none…just write well  or at least be serious about learning the skill.
