     Pomegranates are full of antioxidants and vitamin C. Polyphenol is a chemical containing antioxidants, and these are what give them that vibrant red color. To get an idea of how much antioxidant is in a pomegranate, just remember that it has three times as much antioxidant as green tea or red wine. These antioxidants are helpful to the body because they protect cells from damage, reduce inflammation, and remove free radicals.  Pomegranates also contain more than 40% of the Vitamin C needed on a daily basis.

 

     Another key benefit of this wonderful fruit is its ability to prevent cancer. Recent studies have shown that pomegranate juice can stop the growth of prostate cancer cells. It also has antiviral and antibacterial properties that can help fight off infections and prevent illnesses.

 

     Digestion can also be improved by drinking pomegranate juice because it can reduce inflammation in the gut. Additionally, it can prevent oxidative stress and damage. The ability to reduce inflammation comes due to pomegranates having a lot of antioxidants. Oxidation in general negatively affects the body as it can produce free radicals that damage cells.

     Pomegranate juice is also heart-healthy. It can protect the heart and arteries. It boosts blood flow and prevents the arteries from becoming too stiff and thick. Moreover, it can slow the buildup of plaque and cholesterol in the arteries. This is crucial because about 38% of adults in the United States have high cholesterol, a condition which has been a leading cause of death in the United States—of course before COVID-19 arrived. High cholesterol is when a person has more than 200 mg/dL, when cholesterol is measured during a blood test.

 

     Another astonishing benefit of consuming pomegranate fruit  is its ability to improve learning and memory. Studies show that drinking 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily can definitely make a  difference. As people age, cognition decreases and pomegranate can be a good way to enhance learning and memory functions.

 

     Pomegranate has proven to also help those with diabetes as it can decrease insulin resistance and decrease blood sugar. Pomegranate juice can increase sport performance and endurance. Furthermore, it can reduce soreness and improve strength.  Another advantage of eating a pomegranate is that it can make your skin glow. It’s high antioxidant levels reduce free radicals and keeps your skin cells clear, glowing and healthy.

To gain all these benefits of the pomegranate—whether you get them from drinking the juice or by eating the juicy red seeds, it’s best to include this fruit in your diet. When in season, pomegranate can be eaten daily!
