POETRY: “Ode to my Pen”

By Fatoumata Drammeh

My friend

My partner in crime

I count on you all the time

You are a fountain

In which great rivers flow

Telling the song of smiles and tears

And the memories of all these years

You walk across the corridors of my past

Leaving your permanent trail of ink as you pass

You know me like no other

As if you were my mother

Kissing the lips of a snow white canvas

As empty as the irisses of the blind

The blood drops from your veins

With all the depth of the night sky

Black and blue like a bruise

You begin to write and muse

Silky midnight ribbons flow from your tip

You disturb with a chaos against white

burst of colors that are just right

Thoughts as hot as rays from the sun

With a fiery passion like none

You tattoo all my thoughts and emotions

that could fill thousands of oceans

Like a mother you bring me to life

You create a fresh start

A way for me to leave my mark

New questions to be asked

Answers to be discovered

And dreams to be lived

As we grow from being kids

You are a weapon as sharp as a sword

The latter pierces with a blade

But you pierce with intellect to be gained

And stories for all to say

My ode to my pen

Who shows me a wonder of imagination

Showing me the beauty of creation

My strength, shoulder and friend

But most importantly

The one who always held my hand
