POETRY: “Untitled”

By Kailey Thomas

Eight minutes and forty- six seconds

Was he supposed to consider this a blessing?

You killed him because of the color of his skin

Is this your idea of a win …

“They’re going to kill me, they’re going to kill me”

And they did.

Every ounce of life sucked from beneath his skin

If all lives matter then what about his?

   “ I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,” George Floyd’s last words

But they did die with his now being heard

Racism continues to be an underlying issue

But you can’t just wipe it away with a tissue

One day I hope Martin Luther King’s dreams can be fulfilled

Where one day we live in a nation where we are not judged by the color of our skin

But by the content of our character

We all have that dream
