NY PRO SPORTS: December Edition

By Joseph Brandwen

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, pro sports in New York City, and the country as a whole, have kept going strong these past few months. The Football season is winding down towards its playoff push, the NBA is in the middle of its season, even though due to the work stoppage, the future of the 2022 Baseball season is still up in air as to what’ll happen. Overall, sports in the city are still looking good.

GIANTS:

The Giants currently sit with a record of 4-9 as of December 16th. It surely isn’t very good, but Giants fans are used to being mediocre for the past couple of years. In their last 3 games, they lost to the Chargers 37-21, they lost to the Dolphins 20-9, and won against the Eagles 13-7. On the 19th, they play the division leading Cowboys. The Giants playoff window is shut this year, but they hope to aim for a better future. Sometimes doing poorly can be good, as you get higher draft picks. However the Giants will have to wait for next year. Currently, they’re in a bit of hot water as they have 7 players on the COVID-19 list. The NFL as a whole is experiencing a pretty bad COVID-19 outbreak as are other sports leagues. A couple of Giants coaches also tested positive. Moving forward, the Giants should be more concerned about their players health then their season

JETS:

The Jets are at 3-10, and to no one’s surprise are having a very difficult season. That’s been their trend for years now. On a good note, their rookie QB Zack Wilson is back from injury, and ready to face off against the Dolphins on the 19th. In their last 3 games they lost to the Saints 30-9, they lost to the Eagles 33-18, and beat the Texans 21-14. Like the Giants, the Jets season is also pretty much lost, as their record is 3-10. They hope to fix their woes next year, by scoring a high ranked draft pick for their future endeavors. Other than that, there isn’t much to talk about with the Jets

NETS:

The Nets are off to a very strong season so far, with a record of 21-9. Kevin Durant is having a very strong season, leading the NBA in Points per game with 29.7. James Harden also averaging 20.8 points per game is quite good for the team. Kyrie Irving has yet to play this year from his suspension due to his refusal to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, but nonetheless the Nets are having a fine season. Most recently, on the 18th they lost to the Magic 100-93, but hope to bounce back and win more of their games in the coming weeks. In the next week, they face the Nuggets, the Wizards, and the Trailblazers.

KNICKS:
The Knicks are off to a rocky start, with a record of 13-17, which is not what they’re looking for considering they made the playoffs last year. They lost to the Celtics 114-107 in their last game, and have lost 4 out of their last 5. Knicks fans surely don’t want to see that happening. Veteran player Kemba Walker scored 29 points in his return to the court, leading the team but the Knicks just fell short. The team is looking optimistic though, as they hope to put their past defeats behind them in the hope that they return to playoff form. Next week, they face the Pistons and Wizards.

YANKEES:

The Yankees have been relatively quiet in the MLB offseason so far, not making any big free agent signings, or making any monumental trades. They have shown signs of potentially making a move however. Cutting some unnecessary players to reduce payroll and maybe make a move in the future. That’ll all happen after the players union and MLB front office come to an agreement for the work stoppage to end however.

METS:

Contrary to what some may be used to seeing, the Mets are the NY baseball team that have made all the moves in the offseason. They’ve signed a huge amount of star talent, including all-star, Cy Young award winner and future hall of fame inductee Max Scherzer. They’ve also found a new manager. With all this, the Mets are preparing to make a big push in 2022, putting their past failures behind them, hoping to finally win their division, and thus make the postseason and hopefully the World Series. The Mets surely want that, and have waited for a very long time.
